Will AI replace developers? Wrong question.

Everyone’s debating whether AI will replace developers.

Wrong question.

AI will replace developers who only know how to write code. It won’t replace developers who know how to evaluate code, make architecture decisions, and own the outcome.

Here’s what I mean.

AI tools can generate a login system in 30 seconds. But they can’t decide whether your app needs session-based auth or token-based auth based on your specific business model.

They can’t determine that your multi-tenant SaaS needs tenant-isolated rate limiting to prevent one customer from crashing everyone else’s experience. They can’t look at your payment flow and say “this will silently fail for 5% of transactions.”

Those are judgment calls. They require understanding the business, the users, and the failure modes that only show up in production.

The developers who survive the next 5 years aren’t the ones who type fastest. They’re the ones who can look at AI-generated code and ask:

  • what’s missing?
  • What breaks under load?
  • What happens when the user does something unexpected?
  • What does this look like at 10x the current traffic?

For founders, this changes what “hiring a developer” means.

You’re not hiring someone to write code anymore. You’re hiring someone to make decisions about your product’s architecture, security, and reliability and to review what AI tools produce.

The skill isn’t coding.

The skill is judgment.

Do you think AI tools will make hiring developers easier or harder? Genuine question.

Send me your prototype’s link.

I read every message the same day. Then twenty minutes on a call about what breaks first.
